🚀How to Get Started

New to showing? No problem! We’re here to guide you. Here’s how you can launch into the cat show world:

Step 1: Get Comfortable with Handling

Play with your cat’s paws, ears, and tail gently to get them used to being touched. Practice stacking them on a grooming table or counter so they feel secure and calm.

Step 2: Attend a Show as a Visitor

Before entering, go to a local cat show to get the lay of the land. See how Highlanders are judged, chat with exhibitors, and get inspired.

Step 3: Register with the Right Organization

Most people start with TICA (The International Cat Association).

But TICA isn't the only option! You can also show your Highlander with:

ACFA (American Cat Fanciers’ Association) – Accepts Highlanders and has a welcoming show environment for new exhibitors.

CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association) – Currently does not accept Highlanders for competition, but may allow them as exhibition-only cats at some events.

LCWW (Loving Cats Worldwide) – A newer, fast-growing registry with fun, fan-centered cat shows.

CCA-AFC (Canadian Cat Association) – Recognizes Highlanders and may host local or international shows accessible to U.S. exhibitors.

Independent and Specialty Clubs – Some regional or breed-focused clubs host Highlander-friendly events, perfect for learning and growing in a relaxed setting.

We’ll help you decide which registry and shows are the best match for your cat and your goals!

Step 4: Choose the Right Class

Is your cat a kitten, adult, or altered (neutered/spayed)? Are they a household pet or pedigree? We’ll help guide you to the correct category.

Step 5: Show Prep Basics

Bathe and groom your cat before the show

Pack a comfy carrier, litter box, food/water, and grooming supplies

Arrive early, stay positive, and enjoy the process!
